TYLER NICHOLS

Born in the foothills of Alabama, Tyler Nichols picked up his first guitar at 14 after a wrestling injury left him searching for a way to communicate — and never put it down. By 15 he was playing bars across Alabama, and today — at 21 — he and his band log 7 shows a week across the Southeast, bringing a gritty, soulful blend of Red Dirt, Southern Rock, and blues that draws comparisons to the Allman Brothers, Chris Stapleton, and Bob Dylan. A Season 23 American Idol contestant who recorded his debut album Big Fish at the legendary Muscle Shoals studios, Tyler has graced stages from Flora-Bama to Talladega Superspeedway — and he's just getting started.

Origin & Roots

Tyler's path into music began at 14 — not by choice, but by necessity. A concussion suffered during a high school wrestling match disrupted his ability to communicate, and he found his way back through an old guitar belonging to his brother. He played all day, every day, using the instrument to block out the noise and confusion around him. Within weeks, chords became songs, and songs became a calling.

It wasn't long before Tyler connected with two friends in Pell City, Alabama — Prince Dunaville and Tristen Gressett — who shared his passion for music. The three formed a band and started playing shows around the area. By 15, Tyler Nichols was making a living performing in bars across the state, working through the music that shaped him: the Allman Brothers, Chris Stapleton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bill Withers, and John Mayer. That steady diet of blues, Southern rock, and soul lit a fire that never went out. When his bandmates eventually left for college, Tyler pushed forward on his own — deepening his songwriting through Bob Dylan, Jason Isbell, Joni Mitchell, and John Prine, weaving his blues and soul influences into something distinctly his own.

The Journey

At 20, Tyler was found on Instagram by a producer connected to American Idol. What followed was a golden ticket audition in Nashville, Tennessee, and a trip to Hollywood for Week 1 of Season 23 on ABC. He was eliminated in the second round — but he came home transformed. Tyler has said that American Idol taught him exactly what he wanted to be and exactly what he didn't. He took that clarity back to Alabama, regrouped with his band, and drove north to Muscle Shoals — one of the most storied recording destinations in American music history — to cut his debut album.

The Music & The Band

Before entering the studio, Tyler connected with trumpet player Isaia Amos — a musician from Jacksonville State University's jazz program who also played alongside two of Tyler's bandmates, Randy Pitt (bass) and Tyne Seymour (keys). Adding Isaia's horn alongside Morgan "Live Oak" (guitar, rock/grunge edge) and the dual drumming of Josh Brown and Prince Dunaville created something unexpected: a layered, genre-defying sound that mixes Tyler's folky, blues-soaked vocals and thoughtful songwriting with jazz horn, Southern grit, and rock firepower.

The result was Big Fish — 13 original tracks released March 17, 2026. Live, the Tyler Nichols Band can perform as a solo acoustic act, a trio, a four-piece, a six-piece with keys and horn, or a full big band with backup vocals, sax, and trombone. The band plays everywhere from intimate listening rooms and packed bars to festival stages of thousands. Crowds sing along, stay late, and come back — and the venues notice.
